Abstract

The study aims to establish the relationship between maladaptive patterns of digital self-presentation and irrational beliefs (cognitions), and based on this, to develop targeted therapeutic recommendations. The paper considers Irrational Beliefs (A. Ellis) as the cognitive core driving maladaptive digital behavior. Empirical research results (N = 95 individuals of late adolescence) are presented, examining the correlations between digital identity indicators and key irrational beliefs. Statistically significant positive correlations were found between: External Validation Dependence and the Need for Approval; EVD and Catastrophizing; and Idealization of the Self and Low Frustration Tolerance. It has been empirically established that maladaptive digital identity (image idealization and reliance on ‘likes’) is a behavioral manifestation of the deep-seated irrational beliefs described by A. Ellis. The dependence on external affirmation is directly linked to the irrational demand, "I must be approved," where the absence of approval is perceived as a catastrophe. The idealization of the digital Self acts as a coping strategy to avoid the discomfort associated with imperfection, which is characteristic of low frustration tolerance. These findings empirically extend the model of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) into the context of virtual self-presentation. The research highlights that correcting problematic digital identity requires not merely limiting screen time, but rather cognitive restructuring – working with deep-seated convictions. Based on the results, specific psychological recommendations grounded in REBT and CBT principles are proposed for fostering a more stable and authentic identity in the digital age.
