Abstract

Gender identity is an important aspect of personal development that influences social, emotional, and cognitive processes. The study of this phenomenon requires reliable psychodiagnostic methods adapted to the cultural context. This article presents the process of adapting the Ukrainian version of the Gender Identity/Gender Dysphoria Questionnaire for Adolescents and Adults (GIDYQ-AA), a standardized instrument for assessing gender identity, the level of dysphoria, and associated psychological states. The adaptation process included several stages: a two-step translation (forward and back translation), expert evaluation of content validity, pilot testing, empirical research, and psychometric analysis. During the pilot study on a sample of 50 individuals, minor stylistic inaccuracies were identified and corrected. The main study was conducted on a sample of 150 individuals of different gender identities, allowing the validation of the questionnaire within a broad sociocultural context. Psychometric analysis demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.706) and internal consistency. Factor analysis confirmed the three-factor structure of the questionnaire: gender identity, gender dysphoria, and gender uncertainty, explaining 68.2% of the variance. Criterion validity analysis revealed significant differences between cisgender, transgender, and non-binary individuals. The results indicate that the adapted questionnaire is an effective diagnostic tool that can be used in scientific research, clinical practice, and psychological counseling to assess gender identity and dysphoria. Future studies may expand its application to different age groups and clinical populations. Specifically, this psychodiagnostic instrument will be used in dissertation research on the psychological characteristics of sex-role identification in children with autism spectrum disorders.
